  • Reading for pleasure

    Published 26/10/22

Reading is not just something that children should do in school, it needs to be an everyday part of our lives and something we choose to do at all ages. There are plenty of benefits for those who enjoy curling up with a book. A report carried out for The Reading Agency revealed convincing evidence that reading for pleasure can increase empathy, improve relationships with others, reduce the symptoms of depression and improve wellbeing throughout life. Research has also shown that students who read more show greater language and literacy development. The study by academics at the Institute of Education, part of the University of London, found that reading had the strongest effect on vocabulary development but the impact on maths and spelling was also significant.

    How can you help?

We would encourage you as parents/carers to help your child to find a book to read at home. To aid you with this each half-term we will be recommending a book that will be available from our school library for your child to borrow. These books have been carefully selected but there are lots of other great books to choose from in the library. See below our recommended books for Autumn Term 2:

Here at Co-op Academy Swinton, we’re proud to be supported by the brilliant work of Manchester United Foundation. This autumn, they are providing us with an exciting opportunity to participate in the biggest ever football themed climate action tournament.

The Planet League Cup will see more than 70 professional football clubs and hundreds of schools competing to see who can be the greenest. Our students will score goals by taking small actions that can make a big difference, helping Manchester United Foundation and Co-op Academy Swinton reach the top of the league table.

The tournament will kick off on Monday 10 October and will last for five weeks, ending on 13 November.

We’re asking all families to sign up for free at: www.planetleague.co.uk to represent Manchester United Foundation and help them and Co-op Academy Swinton win The Planet League Cup!

Students will score goals for Manchester United Foundation and Co-op Academy Swinton by taking simple actions that are good for the planet like; walking to school, switching off screens for a while or enjoying nature. There are more than 50 ways to score goals, helping children to play their own small part in protecting the planet.

We know there will be families who follow a variety of football clubs in our school, but we’re asking you to represent Manchester United Foundation to support the incredible work they do in our academy and in the wider community.

Once registered, be sure to click the ‘Settings Tab’ in the top right-hand corner and add school, by first choosing Co-op Academy Swinton Local Authority, then our academy from the drop down menu and clicking save.
